Understanding

I realize this thanksgiving day that I usually write poetry when I am the furthest from those people I love most. In the past, it has been friends and family. In recent, the lady and God.

I look forward to some Redmond-style thanksgiving festivities later today, but at this moment, I am sitting in my sister's beautiful new home nearing 2am by myself.

My sister has made her start in the world of motherhood, my elders are, well, older, and I am just thankful for...

Understanding

Asleep I lie, awake she lies, on our wedding night.
Up I rise, great I sigh, post my wedding night.
Her thoughts alive, doubt arise, post her wedding night.
She talks.
I talk.
The hard parts. Understanding.

Asleep I lie, these nights: joy, pain, and understanding.
Asleep she lies more nights, unless hers are too demanding.
But tonight she sleeps,
and I am awake,
Praying for understanding.
